  1. A corticosteroid is any of several steroid
  2. hormones secreted by the cortex of the 
  3. adrenal glands, also synthetic forms with
  4. similar properties. Corticosteroids have
  5. anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive 
  6. effects and may be used to treat a number of
  7. conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, 
  8. severe allergies, asthma, some skin diseases,
  9. and some cancers. The side effects can be
  10. serious.
